Secret Beach El Nido 2026: How to Get There, What to Expect & Insider Tips

There’s a moment right before you see Secret Beach when you’re treading water in a narrow gap between two limestone cliffs, wondering if you’ve made a wrong turn. Then you squeeze through the opening and it hits you: a completely enclosed, powder-white beach with turquoise water so still it looks like glass. That’s Secret Beach in El Nido, and trust me on this one — it’s worth every minute of the swim to get there.

Secret Beach is one of those places that genuinely lives up to the hype. Hidden from view behind a sheer limestone wall on Matinloc Island in Bacuit Bay, it can only be reached by swimming or snorkeling through a narrow crack in the cliff. No boats can enter. No vendors. Just water, sand, and walls of rock rising straight up around you.

Here’s everything you need to know before you go — how to get there, what to bring, and how to make the most of it.

Where Is Secret Beach in El Nido?

Secret Beach is located on the southwestern side of Matinloc Island, part of the Bacuit Archipelago in El Nido, Palawan. It sits within a protected marine sanctuary, about 45 minutes to an hour by bangka from El Nido town. You can’t see it from the water — the beach is completely hidden behind a vertical limestone cliff, accessible only through a narrow opening at water level.

This is what makes it “secret.” Even standing ten meters away in the water, you wouldn’t know it was there unless someone showed you where to swim.

Matinloc Island is also home to the Matinloc Shrine, a small white chapel perched on a cliff with sweeping views of Bacuit Bay — another popular stop on the same tour route. The island sits in the southern section of the archipelago, deeper into the bay than Big Lagoon or Small Lagoon.

Which Tour Goes to Secret Beach?

Secret Beach is a stop on El Nido Tour C. Tour C is one of four official island hopping circuits out of El Nido, and it covers the southern and western portion of Bacuit Bay. Alongside Secret Beach, Tour C typically includes Helicopter Island (Dilumacad Island), Star Beach, Hidden Beach, and Mline Beach near the Matinloc Shrine.

It’s worth knowing the difference between Secret Beach and Secret Lagoon — two very different places that get confused constantly. Secret Lagoon is a Tour A stop: a circular enclosed pool of water you access through a gap in the cliff. Secret Beach (Tour C) is an actual sandy beach you swim to. Both are beautiful. Neither is a substitute for the other.

If you want to compare all four tours before deciding, our El Nido island hopping tours guide breaks down every stop on every route.

How to Get to Secret Beach: Step by Step

Step 1: Book El Nido Tour C

You can’t visit Secret Beach independently — the only way to get there is as part of an organized island hopping tour. Book Tour C with CMT Ticketing and Services and Secret Beach will be one of your stops. You can choose between a shared group tour (more affordable, sociable) or a private boat (more flexibility with timing at each stop).

Group Tour C runs around ₱1,200 to ₱1,500 per person. A private bangka for Tour C runs ₱5,000 to ₱7,000 for the whole boat, which works out cheaper per person for groups of four or more. Don’t forget the ₱200 El Nido environmental fee if it’s your first day on the water.

Step 2: The Boat Ride to Matinloc Island

Boats depart from Corong-Corong beach in El Nido town, typically around 8:30 to 9:00 AM. The ride to the Matinloc area takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the sea. You’ll pass by dramatic karst formations the entire way — honestly the boat ride itself is half the experience.

Sea conditions matter here. If the swell is up, your boat captain may skip Secret Beach or hold off until conditions calm. This is especially common during the rainy season (June to October). The PAGASA weather service is worth checking the night before if you’re visiting outside peak season.

Step 3: The Swim Through the Cliff

This is the part that surprises most people. Your bangka anchors a short distance from the cliff face, and your guide points out a narrow opening at sea level. It looks small — and it is, maybe 1 to 2 meters wide depending on tide. You swim to it, duck slightly if needed, and kick through.

The swim is short, maybe 20 to 30 seconds. The water inside is calm and shallow. You emerge onto the beach and the whole cove opens up around you.

Insider tip: Wear your snorkel mask for the swim through but leave your fins in the boat. Fins make the narrow passage awkward. And keep your phone in a waterproof case — you’ll want it for photos the moment you come out the other side.

Step 4: Enjoy the Beach

Once inside, you’ve got the whole cove to yourself (or nearly — a few other swimmers may be there depending on timing). The beach is small: maybe 30 meters of white sand, enclosed on all sides by sheer limestone. The water inside is wonderfully clear, ideal for wading and floating. There’s no shade except from the cliffs themselves, so stay aware of sun exposure.

Most groups spend about 20 to 30 minutes at Secret Beach before swimming back through and continuing the tour. If you’re on a private tour, you can linger longer.

Tour C beach stops are relaxed and uncrowded — Secret Beach in particular sees far fewer visitors than the Tour A lagoons.

What to Bring to Secret Beach

Because you’re swimming to get there, you need to think more carefully about what comes with you versus what stays on the boat.

Bring with you:

  • Snorkel mask (required for the swim through, helps visibility)
  • Waterproof phone pouch or small dry bag on a neck lanyard
  • Reef-safe sunscreen applied before you get in the water
  • A sense of adventure — honestly, it helps

Leave on the boat:

  • Fins (too wide for the narrow passage)
  • Backpack, large dry bag, anything bulky
  • Valuables you can’t afford to drop in the water

Reef-safe sunscreen is strongly encouraged at all stops in El Nido’s marine sanctuary. Regular chemical sunscreens bleach coral and are technically discouraged under Palawan’s environmental regulations. A full packing list for your El Nido trip is in our what to pack for Palawan guide.

Best Time to Visit Secret Beach

The ideal window is November through May, when the Sulu Sea is calm, visibility is excellent, and the swim through the cliff is easy. March to May is peak season for a reason: the weather is dry, the water is glassy, and the light inside the cove in late morning is extraordinary.

Can you visit during the rainy season (June to October)? Sometimes, yes. But the swim-through access to Secret Beach is at sea level, meaning any significant swell closes it off. Some days in July and August are completely flat. Others are not. Your boat captain makes the call on arrival — there’s no way to predict it from El Nido town the morning you depart.

So: if Secret Beach is a priority for you, plan your El Nido trip for the dry season. Our best time to visit El Nido guide has the full month-by-month breakdown, including which tours are least affected during the shoulder months.

Is Secret Beach Worth It? Honest Assessment

Here’s the thing: Secret Beach is genuinely one of the most unique spots in El Nido. The combination of the swim-through access and the completely enclosed cove makes it unlike anything else in the archipelago. There’s no beach quite like it on Tour A or Tour D.

That said, it’s a small beach. You’re not spending an hour there. And if you’re uncomfortable with swimming through a narrow gap, the experience can feel stressful rather than magical. Non-swimmers or those who prefer not to snorkel can wait on the boat — the guides won’t force anyone in.

For most visitors, Secret Beach is a highlight of Tour C and a genuine “I can’t believe this place is real” moment. If you’re fit enough to swim 30 meters through calm water, it’s absolutely worth doing.

Considering both Tour A and Tour C? That’s the combination we recommend most to first-time visitors. You get the lagoon experience (Big Lagoon is stunning) plus the open-bay variety of Tour C. Check our El Nido island hopping tours overview for everything you need to plan the right combination.

How to Book Tour C with Secret Beach

The easiest way is to book in advance through a licensed operator. Walk-in bookings work during the low season but tours fill quickly from December to April.

CMT Ticketing and Services offers Tour C as both a shared group tour and private boat option, with accommodation pickup in El Nido town. Message us on Facebook Messenger for same-day or next-day bookings. We can also combine Tour C with other tours if you’re planning multiple days on the water.

If you’re flying into El Nido, most visitors arrive via AirSWIFT from Manila or Cebu into Lio Airport (about 15-20 minutes from El Nido town). Alternatively, fly Cebu Pacific to Puerto Princesa and take a 5-6 hour van transfer north to El Nido.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to swim to reach Secret Beach El Nido?
Yes. Secret Beach is only accessible by swimming through a narrow gap in a limestone cliff. The swim is short (20-30 seconds) and the water is calm, but you do need to get in the water. Non-swimmers can wait on the tour boat.

Is Secret Beach part of Tour A or Tour C?
Secret Beach is part of Tour C. Don’t confuse it with Secret Lagoon, which is a Tour A stop — a completely different location. Secret Beach is an enclosed sandy cove on Matinloc Island. Secret Lagoon is an enclosed pool of water near Miniloc Island.

Can you visit Secret Beach independently without a tour?
No. El Nido’s island hopping is regulated and must be done through licensed bangka operators. You can’t rent a kayak and paddle to Matinloc on your own.

Is Secret Beach safe for children?
Older children who can swim confidently can do the swim-through. Younger children and non-swimmers should stay on the boat. The water inside the cove is calm and shallow once you’re through.

How long do you spend at Secret Beach on a tour?
Typically 20 to 30 minutes on a shared tour. Private tour groups can stay longer if they wish.

What’s the difference between Secret Beach and Hidden Beach in El Nido?
Both are on Tour C and both are enclosed by limestone cliffs. Hidden Beach (also near Matinloc) is accessed via a similar swim-through channel but opens into a slightly larger cove with views of the open sea. Secret Beach is more completely enclosed. Both are worth doing.

Is Secret Beach open year-round?
The tour operates year-round, but access to Secret Beach specifically depends on sea conditions. During rough weather (mainly July to September), the swim-through may be blocked by waves. Your boat captain will decide on arrival.
