Cruise Papers for Filipino Travelers

A cruise is not one country. You fly to one, board in another, and step off in a few more, and each of them can want something different from your passport. This free guide shows you which documents your specific sailing needs.

  • The two questions that decide everything about your paperwork
  • Why sailing from Singapore is simple and sailing from Shanghai is not
  • Why Jeju being visa-free does not help a cruise passenger
  • The order to apply in, and what to do last
  • How ports actually work once you are aboard
  • Why your departure city may not be Manila, and what that changes

One email, the PDF straight to your inbox. Check your promotions tab if it is not in your main folder.

What is inside

Four parts, from booking to boarding.

Part one

A cruise is not one country. Where the ship leaves from is a country you must legally enter, and every port of call is an arrival. That is the part people miss.

Part two

Sailing from Singapore. Visa-free for us, but the arrival card is mandatory, free, and has a short filing window that catches people out.

Part three

Sailing from Shanghai. A Chinese visa to board, and a Korean visa if the itinerary calls at Busan. Two applications, two countries, both before you fly.

Part four

The order to do it in, how ports work once aboard, and the detail most likely to be assumed rather than read: which city your flight actually leaves from.

Who this is for

A good fit if you are

  • Booked on or considering a cruise from Singapore or Shanghai
  • Unsure which visas a multi-country itinerary needs
  • Travelling on a package that departs from Cebu rather than Manila
  • Cruising internationally for the first time

Probably not for you if

  • Your cruise stays within Philippine waters
  • You already hold valid visas for every country on the itinerary
  • You want cabin or dining advice rather than documents

Questions people ask

Do I need a visa for a cruise?
It depends entirely on where the ship boards and where it stops. Boarding means legally entering that country first, and every port of call is an arrival. A Singapore departure and a Shanghai departure are completely different situations.
Jeju is visa-free, so do I still need a Korean visa?
Yes, if the ship calls at Busan. The Jeju exemption requires arriving on a direct international flight to Jeju and does not permit onward travel to the mainland. A cruise passenger fails both tests.
Does the ship keep my passport?
Many lines collect passports at embarkation and handle immigration in bulk at each port. That is normal. Carry a photocopy and a photo of the data page so you are never without proof of who you are.
What if my cruise leaves from Cebu?
Then you need to get there, ideally the night before, and your immigration clearance happens there rather than in Manila. Check the departure city on your booking before anything else.
