El Nido in December 2026: Weather, Crowds, and What to Expect
December is one of the best months to visit El Nido, and also one of the busiest. The Amihan trade winds arrive from the northeast and push the rain clouds away from Palawan’s western coast, leaving clear skies, calm seas, and near-perfect conditions for island hopping. So yes, December is excellent for El Nido. But you need to plan ahead, because everyone else knows this too.
This guide covers everything you need to know: what the weather is actually like day to day, how crowded it gets at Christmas and New Year, what to book in advance, and a few things most December guides miss entirely.
El Nido December Weather: The Real Picture
December sits at the start of Palawan’s dry season, which officially runs from November through May. The Amihan (northeast monsoon) brings steady winds that keep the rain away from the western coast of Palawan, where El Nido sits. In practical terms, this means most December days are sunny, temperatures hover between 26°C and 32°C, and the seas inside Bacuit Bay are generally calm enough for comfortable island hopping.
That said, December isn’t completely rain-free. Early December (the first week or two) can still catch leftover rain from the tail end of the wet season. By mid-December the weather is usually locked in dry. The clearest, most reliable weather is mid-December through January, which conveniently lines up with the Christmas holiday rush.
Insider tip: Underwater visibility in December is excellent. The rain and runoff from the wet season that cloud the water in August and September have cleared, and visibility at snorkeling stops can reach 15 to 20 meters. If photography or snorkeling is a priority for your trip, December conditions are among the best of the year. Check the PAGASA weather service a few days before your trip for current conditions in Palawan.
How Crowded Is El Nido in December?
Busy. The short answer is that El Nido in December is significantly more crowded than the shoulder months of October, November, April, or May. Here’s how it breaks down by week:
Early December (December 1-15)
Moderately busy. The weather is settling in and the Christmas holiday crowd hasn’t fully arrived. Tours are available without much advance notice, and accommodation has more availability.
This is honestly the sweet spot of December: you get the good weather without the chaos. If you have flexibility, aim for this window.
Christmas Week (December 20-26)
Very crowded. Flights fill up weeks in advance. The lagoon tours are fully booked, and popular restaurants have queues. The town takes on a festive atmosphere (Filipinos celebrate Christmas enthusiastically, and the decorations and holiday energy are genuinely enjoyable), but if you’re hoping for quiet lagoon moments, you’ll need to book a 6am departure and move fast.
New Year Week (December 27-January 3)
Peak of the peak. This is the single busiest week in El Nido’s year. Accommodation is at a premium, tour slots book out weeks or months in advance, and the town beach fills up for fireworks on New Year’s Eve. Come here in this window knowing what you’re getting into, or plan around it.
What to Book in Advance for December

Book accommodation as early as possible. December in El Nido is one of the few times when “book early” isn’t just advice, it’s necessary. Good mid-range rooms and resorts with sea views fill up weeks in advance for the Christmas and New Year period, particularly anything in or near the town center. Check-in and check-out logistics matter more in December too: flights to Lio Airport now leave from Clark, not NAIA, so check your departure airport and flight time on the itinerary receipt when you book.
Island hopping tours also need advance reservation for the December peak. Our El Nido island hopping tours can be reserved through CMT before you arrive, which is strongly recommended for any travel between December 20 and January 3. The alternative is to shop around at operators in town on arrival, but your tour date choice will be limited.
For transport from Puerto Princesa: if you’re flying to Puerto Princesa and taking the van north, book the van in advance. December is the one month when the private van options fill up. Our El Nido transport services include private van hire from Puerto Princesa with an advance booking option.
Is December a Good Time for Island Hopping?
Yes, December is one of the best months for island hopping in El Nido. The Amihan winds keep the western coast sheltered, which means Bacuit Bay is typically calm. The boat rides between islands are smooth, the lagoon swims are comfortable, and the snorkeling visibility is excellent.
The one caveat is afternoon wind pickup. By 1pm to 2pm, the trade winds can get stronger and make open-water crossings slightly choppier. Joiner tours generally leave around 9am and return around 4 to 5pm, and Tour A stays in sheltered water even when the afternoon wind picks up. Our guide to El Nido Tour A covers the stops in detail.
One more thing worth knowing: Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon can no longer be visited on the same day. Big Lagoon is on Tour A and Small Lagoon is on Tour D, and combination tours are banned. In December, when both lagoons are at their busiest, a private boat that runs the route in reverse is the best way to dodge the crowd. Budget for the ₱400 eco fee (valid 10 days) and around ₱200 per lagoon entrance, all cash.
El Nido in December vs Other Months
December vs November
November is similar in weather (the dry season is just starting) but with significantly fewer tourists and lower accommodation prices. November is the better choice if you want El Nido’s weather without December’s crowds. The main downside of early November is some residual rain from the wet season, but by late November it’s essentially the same as December conditions.
December vs April
April is late dry season with excellent weather and fewer international tourists (it coincides with Philippine Holy Week in some years, which brings local domestic travelers, but the Christmas surge is absent). April is arguably the best month of the year for El Nido, but December is the second-best option for travelers tied to the Christmas holiday window.
December vs February/March
February and March are peak dry season with reliably excellent weather. Slightly fewer tourists than December but busy. These months have the best balance of weather and crowd levels if you have flexibility.
Practical Tips for December in El Nido
Book Everything Early
Accommodation, island hopping tours, airport transfers, and the Puerto Princesa to El Nido van if you’re taking that route. December is the one month in El Nido where last-minute planning creates real problems. Contact us at CMT Ticketing and Services to lock in your tour dates before you travel.
Go Early in the Day
Wake up at 6am and get to wherever you’re going before 9am. The difference between Big Lagoon at 7:30am (almost empty) and at 10am (every tour boat in El Nido) is dramatic in December. Schedule early tours, catch sunrise on the town pier, and be back for lunch. Afternoons are for hammocks and cold San Miguel.
Reef-Safe Sunscreen is Mandatory
Bring reef-safe sunscreen, because you’ll be swimming over live coral inside a protected area all day. The December sunshine is intense and reef-safe options in town can sell out in peak season. Bring your own to be safe. Our reef-safe sunscreen guide for Palawan covers what to look for.
Pack Light, Waterproof
December boat rides are generally smooth but you will get splashed. A dry bag for your electronics, a change of clothes in your day pack, and rash guards for sun protection are the December essentials. The weather is warm (26°C to 32°C) so packing light is practical anyway.
Budget for Higher December Prices
Accommodation in El Nido runs 20 to 40 percent higher between December 20 and January 3 compared to the same properties in October. Island hopping prices are more stable since they’re mostly fixed by operators. Plan for the accommodation premium if your trip falls in the Christmas-New Year window.
Christmas and New Year in El Nido
The Filipino Christmas celebration is something worth experiencing if you’re in El Nido for December 24 or 25. Town restaurants put up decorations from as early as September (Filipinos are known for the world’s longest Christmas season), and by December the town has real festive energy. Christmas Eve brings fireworks over the bay, carol singing, and extended restaurant hours. It’s cheerful rather than commercial, and genuinely worth experiencing.
New Year’s Eve is the bigger party. Fireworks are visible from anywhere near the town beach, and several beach bars and restaurants do special events with live music. If you want to see in the New Year in a beautiful setting, El Nido delivers.
